Two friends of mine have independently asked why when they
select a group of files in the folder using Ctrl + click,
then do File/Delete, they get multiple copies of the files
in the folder and on the desktop. I can't replicate the
problem. Anyone know what's happening? Thanks.

they should stop slightly moving the mouse whilst holding the ctrl key..
that makes copies of all marked items.. give em a beer to stop shaking ;)
