Both my mum in law and myself have panasonic dvd recorders which have
a slot for sd cards, but both of us have cams which take xd cards. Is
there such a thing as a genuine adapter to plug an xd card into an sd

No and there never will be and the interfaces are too different. Go get
some SD cards and forget about using the XD cards in an adapter.

are you telling me that an xd camera will accept an sd card or am I
    missing something?

No. How the hell did you get that from what I posted?
If you need an SD card, then buy an SD card. Forget about using
XD cards in an adapter. If you also need some XD cards, then buy
some of those too and understand that the two are totally incompatible
and that adapters will never exist.

I was being sarcastic... still haven't found an emoticon for that.
Then you completely misunderstood my question. The cameras in
question, from which images would be transferred via the slot on the
machine with the inserting of a card are both XD cameras. Buying a
shitload of SD cards wouldn't change that. I don't own an SD card,
haven't seen one up close so was asking if there was such a thing as
an adapter.... the answer was no, i pretty much worked that out, but
then you advised me to go out and buy an SD card... which would... er,
    do no good whatsoever.

If you need to transfer pictures from one media to another then get
readers for both for your computer and copy. Or use the camera's
    usb cable.

    this may help

    amazon.com GeJasco97929Xd/Smart Media Card Reader $8.49

maybe this will help you, i was having the same problem (1990's camera vs 2009 laptop) (I couldn't find the USB that came with the camera-otherwise I would not have had a problem)

Apparently, many people are having this issue based on the number of questions posted around different sites,

The responses on this site were quite rude.

How rude - theres no need for that tone of post from AZ Nomad. I understand you problem completely - this is what you need...

OK, so It wont let me post a URL here due to my lack of postings, but if you go to amazon.co.uk and search for "SmartMedia Adapter For xD Card"

I will come back with exactly what you need, ie an adaptor that takes an XD card that will fit into an SD slot.

Now you can understand that these adaptors really *do* exist! lol

that converts XD to SMARTMEDIA not SD. Two completely different kinds of cards. A smartmedia adapter will be of no use if you need to end up with an SD card. Your best bet is a usb card reader.
