Dell inspiron laptop 600m 3 years old XP (kept up to date).

Windows intermittently fails to load at start up and just hangs. This
happens before it gets to point of getting to set up options or boot option
(f2 or f12 from starting up). The problem resolves itself one time if I
remove battery, unplug, wait about 2 minutes and replug, put battery in and
    retry.

Any suggestions as to what the cause is and what a better fix is? Thanks.

The cause is Windoze. The fix is to install Linux.

  3. I think that's just a normal Windows daily maintenance procedure...

Probably the power supply. Try unplugging the computer, holding the
power button in for 30 seconds (use a watch - it matters), releasing the
button, plugging in again and powering up. Consumer desktops have *very*
    low pow rating power supplies.

But ummm... the OP's computer isn't a desktop.

Power supply my keyster! His laptop is "FROGGED"! He dropped his laptop or
accidentally stepped on it and is giving us the run-around. Try using the
heel of the hand and give it a few stiff open-handed slams to the bottom
around the middle. That should counteract the damage done before.

Really? I read that he says "...before it gets to the point of getting to
set up options or boot option (F2 or F12 from starting up)." Where in this
POST (get it?) is Windows doing anything?

  11. At that point (F2, F10, F12) you haven't even touched the bootsector of your
harddrive. If your lap hangs at the bios level, it isn't the fault of your
    OS.
If, however, the XP bootsplash appears or the laptop responds to F8 pressed
at the proper time when the bios logo disappears, you may have a 3yr old
dying harddrive or malware or whatever. When you are lucky and get into
windows, look up the event viewer.

I've noticed windows XP does what he said intermittently fails to start up and
just hangs when you use the operating system for more than 3 years. Gates did
this on purpose to "FROG" you into buying or purchasing or pirating windows
vista also known as the dog's breakfast.

    Right. Yet you're a top-poster. Gotcha.
