I have a Sony Trinitron 21" GDM-5402 that I bought used so no warranty :(.

The monitor works fine for the most part except if I maximize a window or
when there is too much white on the screen. This will cause the monitor to
turn itself off. I have tried different vidcard drivers, different hz and
resolution settings and it still does the same thing. I have also tried the
monitor on 2 different computers and both did the same thing. I'm wondering
what part of the monitor is causing this to happen? I have not tried a
different monitor cable yet, but I doubt that will fix it. Any ideas?

If you bought it from a shop, take it back, it hasn't been properly tested, just
passed on to the first "mug".
Warranty or no, you should still be protected by statutes.

Sounds like the monitor's power supply has a problem. Suggest you do
    what Brian recommends.
