The system has an onboard sound chip (see my thread about the HP Pavilion
503n) which is a Realtek AC97 audio chip

When playing WAV files you hear a slight ring in the background (high
pitched ring, like your ears ringing, or like the sound a picture tube of a
    TV/Monitor puts out sometimes).

When playing MIDI files this doesn't happen.

Any idea why or what to do to fix it? This didn't happen before, prior to
format/reload. Wrong settings? There is an equalizer setting that I can
adjust & options for "room/hall/ect..." for other preset settings (kind of
like WinAmp has). Any idea how to manipulate this to fix the problem? This
is on WinXP system. The ring occures durring ANY "WAV" playback, even if
that part of the WAV is silent (can take a WAV with silence at the end &
play only the silent part & still hear the ringing).
