Virus scanner bug cost Trend $8 million

    Trend Micro antivirus reports that a bug in its software cost the company $8 million US, forcing it to lower its revenue and profit forecasts for the second quarter of 2005. A software update released on April 23 consumed processor power of affected machines, mainly Windows XP systems with Service Pack 2 and Trend Micro's OfficeScan PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 VirusBuster. Trend Micro quickly released another update to fix the problem; most of the $8 million came from the cost of setting up a call center to help affected customers. The company estimates that 28,300 customers and 700 organizations were affected by the bug, mostly in Japan.
