USB2 device running at USB1 speed

  1. I have a Freecom external USB hard drive which was working fine with my XP
Home laptop up until recently at USB2 speed... now, whichever of the 3 USB2
ports I plug it into, I get the message "this device works faster if you use
a USB2 port, click here for a list". This happens whichever USB port I use.

I was under the impression that ALL my USB ports are USB2, according to the
laptop manufacturer, all USB2 drivers are integrated into Windows XP anyway.
Now it is taking forever to transfer small files, is there any way to get
    the USB2 functionality back?

You could try to remove the USB ports in Device Manager. After a reboot
Windows should redetect them and reinstall the drivers.
