I have just bought a Belkin USB High Speed Hub, set it all up and I get a
mesage saying it will only run on half speed, I need a high speed connector on
the machine. Will my printer and scanner work ok

I should imagine that your motherboard dosen't support USB2 (only USB1)
Thus (I imagine) that you will need to buy a USB2 PCI card.
('Maplins 3port USB PCI ~£30' but I know thiere are cheaper).

I should think that you printer and scanner will work whatever, as they are
    'slow devices'
