Trend Micro anti-virus in BIOS

    What, if anything, can this accomplish under XP? Do XP viruses
    actually try to write directly to the boot sector or is the registry
    about as low as they go? Can it interfere with a legitimate function
    of XP?

    yes - A virus can have access to hardware just as a device driver does - as
    long as the virus has permission to do what it wants to do ( are you logged
    on as administrator?) then it can do whatever including rewriting the boot
    sector.
