    Hello

I have recently started using Thunderbird, V1.0, which I am finding
    excellent (previously used OE 6.0).

My query is that when I press the "Get Mail" button & there is none, the
message "There are no new messages on the server" pops up and then
disappears quickly. Is there any way to make it stay on the screen until you
start another task. I often press "Get Mail" and then switch to another
application & then return to Thunderbird - the message has disappeared & I
don't really know the status of my email, although I guess it's likely to be
a case of "no news is good news".

Not a huge problem but I think it would be handy if the message "stuck".

Concur. There is a bug on this issue
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=243460
and it occurs in the suite as well
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208124

    Related bugs
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=215619
Releated bug (but the converse actually)
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208129
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207969

No suggested workarounds as of yet
It seems there are problems with the persistance of the messages in the
status bar, either too short, or not being removed at all. However, they
all have a trivial/nuisance/low priority factor to them.
