Street lights

    I've just taken some local night shots with my new digital
    camera. I also noticed, in passing, that pointing at a
    street light produced a vertical beam down the LCD
    coinciding with the street lamp. What's happening here?

    Lens Flare.

    The phenomena of a point light source.
    Under the right conditions, you get a star effect.
