Status Bar message

    When I take my laptop from the office to home, I see a message on the
    status bar "looking up xxx.com"

    Where xxx.com is a web page I looked at from the office network.

    The time it takes to retrieve that page is in the order of minutes !!

    Even when I look at web pages from my own bookmarks list it says
    "looking up ....."

    What does this message mean and I can I get my speed back.
