At home, BT Infinity 76Mb/s service, showed 52Mb/s download speed on installation (Home hub 3). My oldish Dell laptop generally shows 20-25Mb/s on wireless connection, as does my Nexus 7 2012 model, while more modern devices with wireless n show 30-35Mb/s. All show about 9Mb/s upload. On a recent visit to my son's house in Derby, same BT service (in principle!), connected to hub (Home hub 5) using hub password ( i.e. not using Fon), my Nexus 7 showed 10Mb/s download but 12-14Mb/s upload, as did my phone which shows 30+Mb/s at home. We had a brief discussion about how relatively slow his broadband connection was.
Almost certainly local Wifi contention issues as every BT modem in the street fights for control over channel 11. ISTR they have improved the default settings to avoid this but I don't know when.
Then my son showed me the speed on his laptop, again using wireless and using the hub password - 72Mb/s download. All measurements using OOKLA. Can anyone explain the vast difference in the speeds shown on different devices at my son's house when they record much faster speeds on my apparently slower broadband at home?
Look for neighbouring Wifi networks on the same channel and try to pick a channel that is cleaner or on the less commonly used 5GHz band.
