Does the "inside" address in a static(inside, outside) mapping have to
belong to a subnet directly connected to the PIX or can it also belong,
for example, to a subnet behind a router directly connected to the PIX?

    Thanks

it can belong to something behind a router - as long as the pix knows
    where to send the packet.

    A: No.
Q: Should I include quotations after my reply?
