Well this isn't earth shaking or anything and I just noticed it and
    thought it a little odd.

    Redhat Linux 9 system
    D100
    IBM 1G microdrive
    CF card reader

So as root I mount the reader and move all the files off the IBM and into
a directory. Fire up KDE and there they are in thumbnail form (I can see
the *.nef pics) in the file manager.

Isn't nef suposed to be some whiz bang proprietary format???

There is an imbedded thumbnail in the file.
