  1. That is true. But why should I do that to correct an ISP error?

For sure, it is inconvenient. And yes I could be allocated one in the range.

But who says it's an error?

AIUI, infonet services corporation were in the USA and registered the
range, they were bought by BT, who (I'm sure you know) own Plusnet, and
now use their addresses ... They're allocated by the ARIN registry so
will probably always be though of as on the wrong side of the Atlantic
by sites using geocoding, it's not precise at the best of times.

  3. Perhaps "error" may have been too harsh. However, it still is a fact that a
user in the UK might then have an ip (or part of one) that resolves to a
location in the USA. There's something about that which can't be right.

  4. It's not just gambling sites. The BBC use geolocation - which is a PITA
at work when we want to test media based products, and they think we're
all in ... I won't name the country. But it's where the corporate
    gateway exits.

To me, 'error' is erring on the side of politeness.

  6. Which company?
    Not quite.

BT acquired the IP's through Infonet and consequently the range is still
registered to their address in the states.

The IP's belong to ARIN address space so we can't really transfer
registration to an organisation in a different region.

In order to do this, what we really need is an intra-RIR transfer from
ARIN to RIPE. Unfortunately, no recognised process exists for this
(although it's being worked towards -

The fact the addresses are still registered to Infonet needn't stop a
geo-location provider from correctly assigning a UK location to them.
We've spent a lot of time ensuring that the popular geo-location
    providers are all doing this.
Put frankly, we need these IP's so we're not going to stop assigning
them. If anything, further ranges will be introduced over time.

The solution to your problem is for the gambling site to either correct
or update the geo-location database data they're relying on to determine
    where you're based.

  9. Thanks.

At what point does it cause problems? When depositing funds? Placing a bet?

  10. Thanks for your reply.

At login there's a message that comes up to say "you are out of
jurisdiction" or something similar. It's only on the 146. ips. They say
    contact your isp.

  11. Managed to replicate the problem.

I've dropped Marathonbet an email and will see where it gets me. As
explained previously, there's little we can do at our side to influence
    this behaviour.

I've just logged a query with the support desk again. However, contrary to
what happened before the newsgroup status shows the servers have been up for
79 days 22 hours. They may well be up but access is not.

  17. There's a Service Status announcement published here -

    Just keep tabs on that.

Last I heard, we need to make a firewall change, Giganews introduced new
IP's to their auth platform without any forewarning.

  18. Thanks again Bob.

    You're very helpful.

  19. Firewall change was made this morning but it doesn't seem to have helped.

    Back to the drawing board...
