I use an iMac, if that matters. My problem is that I have
been sent a SPAM message that freezes my machine and have to
use the escape button. Every time I touch that message the
same thing happens; otherwise, everything works fine. My
question is, hiw do I get rid of this message in my inbox
so I don't inadvertently contact it again? Can the ISP do
    this for me? Thanks.

usually there should be some sort of 'webmail' for example,
    www.webmail.yourISPhere.com
you can log in that way, and delete the evil message.

And how exactly do you propose that ISP based webmail is going to access his
    Outlook Express Inbox?

Try turning off the preview pane. If you need instructions, confirm
whether you are using Microsoft Outlook Express Macintosh Edition - 4.5.
