Missing or Corrupt \windows\system32\config\

Discussion in 'Computer Support' started by Charlie Evans, Feb 27, 2004.

  1. My niece is (was) running XP Pro w/SP1 on an Intell 700 CPU and Gigabyte
board with US Robotics 56K modem,
Rage Fury Video Card and a SoundBlaster Sound card, and 256K of Memory. She
also has Office XP Pro, Adobe Acrobat, PhotoDeluxe, And Photoshop 5.5 and
My e-Trust antivirus from Computer Associates. Antivirus is current.
Firewall is enabled. Security Patches for XP Pro have been applied She was
on the net and closed everything down and turned off the computer. Turned
back on about 3 hours later and got the following Windows cannot
continue \windows\system32\config\windows file is either corrupt or
missing. ..You might try the repair function in Windows XP insert the
Program CD and select "r" at the first screen. She did not get the XP Pro CD
with the computer... Also, She does not have a Recovery Disk to use with the
    automatic recovery console.
Hope this is not result of a virus/Trojan/worm
    What to do Now???

Any good suggestions, other than go get XP Pro and start over with a clean
    install?? Thanks
    Charlie

    This may help:

If the "easy way" doesn't work, the hard way, unfortunatly, requires an
XP install CD. The Microsoft document that deals with this is here:

You're welcome. Sometimes a clean install is the best fix.

They'll be fine. Alfonso and Londo will have the spoo they need and
get them back by the time it gets light.
