I have had the loan of an almost-unused Aspire1 netbook and would like
to return it in as pristine a condition as possible. Hoping to remove
the browser caches/history, etc. (can do) and all the config-type
files that might be modified. I wondered if a template of such a
    script might exist?

It's called reinstalling linux along with formatting all partitions.
If he provided disc for that netbook, use it - assuming you *know*
the owner has backed up *his* information from it. Otherwise, you'll
have to live with the owner knowing whatever you did with *his*
"computer" Which files have been changed by automatic scripts would be
impossible to determine except by looking for files by their modify date.
This *can* be done with Midnight Commander and other file managers, but
the script would require knowledge of the files beyond just that. How
would you tell the script the difference between a modified picture and
a configuration file for example? It would either have to be created by you
or someone paid by you (you won't find someone willing to do this for free).
Also the likelyhood of the version of the file that existed before your
changes would at best only exist if it was changed only *once*. That would
be stored as the file name preceeded by a "~"

You could buy some unix "animal" (Prentice-Hall) books and start reading.
If you know some bash already, it's feasible you could write such a script
    yourself inside of a week.

As far as configuration files, I can't see the worry unless you've got
some new screensaver or background picture.

A more detailed explanation would require knowing what *exactly* you did
change and what you used for a window manager.

Finally, it *is* someone elses computer, what you did with it *is* their
    buisness after all.

There are a lot of different Aspire One models; what specifically is

Is the linux Linpus Linux Lite?

Before someone (else) can get ready to advise you about cleaning -- it
makes a lot of difference what 'kind of' cleaning needs to be done. For
example - as an extreme example to make a point - if you've been viewing
kiddie pr0n and an investigator interested in prosecuting is going to
take the netbook now for forensics, that is a different situation than
just returning a netbook you innocently used back to a disinterested
party who isn't going to look for anything that isn't evident.

Acer makes a recovery DVD "Acer Aspire One
Linux recovery DVD available for download - Acer has posted a disc image
on its FTP site with everything you need to restore an Acer Aspire One
mini-laptop with Linpus Linux Lite to its factory default condition."

If you have a DVD burner, you can handle it that way. Else you could put
the DVD .iso on a usb stick and boot from that.

  4. Why not simply make an image of the OS partition.

If the OS occupies less than half the drive, create a second partition on
which to create an image of the OS partition.
Check it's valid and do a restoration to check it works OK.

Then you can do whatever you like on it - and once done, restore it to the
identical state you got it in.

  5. Probably. What are you so worried about them finding?
