iTunes and music files saved in my documents

I've already discovered that if I take iTunes off my drive, the music
files remain in 'My Documents -> My Music'. If I were to reinstall
iTunes and then transfer all the songs from My Documents into the
iTunes library, could I delete them from 'My Documents'?

The reason I ask is because this is a laptop, and the sheer volume of
music saved is causing the disk memory to run low. I'd like to resolve
this problem by deleting the music files (about 3G worth) but I'm
afraid and unsure how to go about doing it because I don't want to hook
up my iPod and then erase whats been uploaded to it.

    Is there any solution possible?

Why would moving the location of your music files free up hard drive space?
