Issues assigning drive to removable storage

XP Pro, Laptop. Just purchased a Olympus E-Volt e500 digital camera.
Seemed to install fine. When I connect my camera, it does show in
Manage, Disk Management, but no drive letter assigned. If I assign a
letter, it assigns it. It doesn't show in My Computer. If I go to
star, run, E:\, I get a message that no program is associated. If I go
to E:\DCIM (Start, Run, E:\DCIM), I see that folder.

Olympus tech support tells me the fact that it doesn't show in my
computer, nor that I can go to start, run E:\, is causing it not to be
able to upgrade the firmware on the camera.

Any ideas on what the cause is? All drivers appear to be installed.

    Thanks.

Guess the subject should be "assigning drive letter to removable

I've seen this happen on usb memory sticks, usually when the computer has
preset drive letters. Some memory sticks are okay with it, and will seek
the first available drive letter, and some are stupid, if you have a c:, d:
    ,f: they won't know to try e:. :(

What drive letters do you have in my computer?

It uses USB 1.1 (MiniB) - remove the USB plug from the Computer side
wait a moment (5 sec) and plug it back in. You ARE running windows XP
    aren't you?!

It should be USB 2.0, I believe the documentation stated.. I've tried
the remove, reinsert trick, no go.

Yep, as I stated, XP Pro. :-D

    and that's it.

The software for your camera, is it the newest version? Hmm.. Try
uninstalling the software and then connecting the camera without the
software loaded. I wonder if you can access it's memory functions without
their software. Make sure to disconnect/reconnect your camera after
    removing the software.

The online doc stated MiniB (1.1), but perhaps they wisely upgraded it.
