Is 255.255.255.254 illegal

    I am trying to set up a tunnell between to locations.........Well the problem i am facing is subnet mask 255.255.255.254 works fine for "C2600 Software (C2600-IM), Version 12.3(1a), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)" Ciscorouter, where as the same thing doesn't work for "IOS ™ C2600 Software (C2600-IM), Version 12.2(7), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)" cisco router........When used for the later it says "bad subnet mask /31".................The configuration done on both the routers is the same............kindly help me out with the same.........Also is mask /31 illegal.........wot is going wrong

    Rfc 3021

    Although the 31-BITs Masking is ILLEGAL as u have got only 2 IPs

    1) 1 for the Subnet, and
    2) 1 for the broadcast

    But 31-Bits Prefix can be used for Point-to-Point Link (RFC 3021 Compliant)
