Ipod shuffle help please

    Hi all,
    I recently purchased an Ipod shuffle. Here's my question via a scenario:
    I transfer songs from my hard drive to Itunes. I then transfer the songs
    from Itunes to my shuffle. I then delete the songs from my hard drive.
    The next time I connect my shuffle to the computer to add different songs
    the previous songs are deleted!
    Do I have to keep songs on my hard drive?
    How do I stop songs from being deleted.

    You can configure Itunes to NOT automatically update your IPOD everytime you
    connect.
