IP ADDRESS

Hi:

I have a question? I am using Broadband service right now. I like to know
whether my IP address will remain the same after I disconnect from the
network. I heard the IP address will change after the modem is switched off.
Otherwise, it will remain the same on the computer even after the
disconnection on Windows. I am using Windows XP.

That rather depends on what hardware device is assigning the IP address. If
your PC is connected directly to your modem, then the modem is assigning it,
and when it's switched off, there is no network. If (like many folks) you
have more than one PC in the household, you are generally using a router (in
between the modem and the PC(s)) and then the router is generally set to
assign the IP address. In that case, switching off the modem will have no
effect on the PC, as the network will (or rather should!) still be
functioning correctly.

So what you meant is if my computer is directly connected to the modem, then
a new IP ADDRESS will be assigned after I turned off and then back on again.
Right???

In many cases that would be of no consequence to activities permitted
under the TOS for a home internet account.

 

That would be up to the cable or DSL company. Turn it off for long enough
and yes, it will probably assign a new IP address. Of course if you pay
extra, you can probably get what's called a Static IP which doesn't change
while you still have the broadband account.

 

But what I am trying to do is I am trying to post an online ad on some sites
but I think they are tracking I am uploading it using the same computer (same
IP ADDRESS???) and thus not allowing to post subsequent ads. I am thinking
if it is possible to change to a different IP ADDRESS, I can get rid of this
problem. Please help. Thanks.

How long do you think I need to turn off the modem? Beccause I really want a
fresh new IP address so that I can post subsequent ad on some website. I
think the site knows I am using the same computer (same IP ADDRESS) and thus
stop me from posting further ads. But I need to update my ad on a continual
basis, otherwise, I will lose my customers.

Ask your broadband company, I've know folks that say it can be a short as an
hour or two and others that say at least 48 hours. Of course 48 hours isn't
much use to you, you'd not want to lose internet connection for that long!

ASK HIM TO GIVE YOU A STATIC IP WHICH IS MANUALLY CONFIGURED AND DOES NOT
CHANGE EVEN YOU WANT TO CHANGE
