On an XP Pro system, I web browse from the system out to domain name
and direct IP address web sites using FireFox, but Internet Explorer 6
cannot browse to any site, not even 127.0.0.1 with a local web server
running! It can browse to local files through the file system (such as
    "file://C:\test.html").

All other Internet services work, such as FTP, PING, VNC, etc. out to
    the LAN or Internet.

The other weird thing is that I cannot ping this machine or connect to
its shares from the LAN or web.

    What could it be?

    Thanks!

Tools, internetet options, connections, lan settings, make sure Use a
    proxy is unchecked?

Failing that, the version of IE and the error would help.
    Firewall.
