Insufficient bandwidth problem

    Whilst attempting for the first time to watch content on my favourite
    football teams website last weekend, i received a message on the screen
    that my connection had 'insufficient bandwidth' to diplay the video, i
    could however hear the audio feed albeit with buffering delay.

    I am trying to establish what the causes of this problem are, i am aware
    that ISP's restrict band width at peak times but cannot think that is
    the only cause.

    I live in a very rural area about 2km from the exchange, i believe the
    overhead network from the exchange was upgraded about 7 or 8 years ago
    when broadband became available in my area, my overhead service line is
    about 15 yrs old. My broadband ISP is not one that has it's own
    equipment at the exchange, i.e it rents from BT wholesale.

    Can anyone explain what factors influence the bandwidth delivered to end
    users, unfortunately watching live content at a less busy time is not
    really an option as premier league football in the UK is predominantly
    played on weekend afternoon or midweek evenings.

    You need hardly any bandwidth to stream audio. About 1.5Mbps for TV and
    3.5M for HD video but more is generally better unless you can live with
    it freezing with "Buffering..." or an annoying icon displayed.

    The BBC iPlayer diagnostics used to offer a helpful page for consumers
    struggling with streaming but it was obviously far too useful so they
    removed it :(
    What speed does your modem sync at? And how well does it do with BT
    Wholesale speed test or an independent one like uSwitch.

    Run it directly connected and then do advanced diagnostics on your phone
    line and tell us the results. And an independent one:
    Kitz is a good place to look for hints on cleaning up a rural phone line
    to get the best you can out of what is pretty much wet string!

    Thanks for that Martin

    The (the independent one) is showing 5.53Mbps with
    latency of 182ms. I will run the BT test when i have more time to do so.

    Suggests your BRAS is 6Mbps and sync slightly over 6.5M which is more
    than I get. But I can stream HD video most days with sync >4.5Mbps.

    Modem error stats might shed some light on what is going on. You might
    be better off with a higher SNR and slower sync rate to get a more
    stable connection if your ISP can be persuaded to play ball.

    The latency number you have is terrible. I am on interleaved and about
    50ms which TBH I think is already too slow. I used to get fastpath and
    20ms back when my line was almost error free. Unfortunately corrosion
    and ancient copper rural overhead phone lines have taken their toll.

    So, the next questions are:
    What device were you watching the football on?
    How is it connected to the router/modem? Wired or wireless?

    I was watching on my 2yr old 500Gb laptop in wireless mode, the router
    is about 9 feet away from the laptop (in the same room).

    I have carried out another speed test this morning using the ethernet
    cable i.e laptop directly connected by cable to the router, the results
    are 10.61 Mbps (the graph shows a very spikey peak with the average more
    like 1/3 of the peak) and 32 ms latency.

    So, your wifi is affecting you bandwidth quite badly. I would expect it
    to be better considering you're not very far away from the router. I get
    a 20-30% drop IIRC from two rooms away. What's your router?

    What about the football streams? Are they any better?

    You still haven't answered the question of what speed is your modem
    syncing to the phone line. It sounds on the face of it like you have
    plenty of bandwidth but terrible local interference on your Wifi.

    It it can manage 10.6Mbps it must be synching at 11.5Mbps or higher.

    If it works OK with wired ethernet then the fault is with the Wifi - try
    changing channels or do a survey to see who else is competing with you
    on the same band.

    The peak will be consistent with your sync speed.

    The average will be affected by contention for resources between your
    local exchange and the rest of the internet. It may therefore vary
    wildly throughout the day; and be particularly slow in the evening.

    You should change your ISP to one who guarantees lower contention.

    Such an ISP should also give you a management portal where you can see
    the BRAS profile. This is an important parameter that can be affected
    by unreliability in your connection - a good ISP might well be able to
    get Openreach to resolve any such problems.

    My router is a Netgear DGN1000SP as supplied by my ISP.

    I haven't tried the football streams today yet but there is a match on
    this evening and i will try it then.

    Historically my connection has always seemed faster in the morning
    gradually slowing throughtout the day.

    That is more like it. Average speed is around 95% of BRAS profile speed
    on a well behaved line so BRAS probably is 11M and sync 11.5M.
    Certainly the best time to benchmark is early morning before America
    wakes up if you want the fastest speeds.
    That doesn't help out in the sticks where backhaul is BT or nowt.
    The BT Wholesale Speedtest will let you see the BRAS profile for your
    ISP line if you select advanced diagnostics after the basic test and
    wait an age whilst it uploads results to the server.

    I carried out the BT Wholesale speedtest at lunchtime today, these are
    the results;

    Download speed : 11.59 Mbps

    Upload speed : 1.04 Mbps

    Ping (latency) : 42.88ms

    The additional diagnostics show;

    IP prof down : 10.24

    IP prof up :0.83

    Max achievable: 21.0 down .83 up

    I'm guessing there are a series of steps, as the schoolkids arrive
    home (with their WiFi devices, the local workers after them, and
    finally the longer distance commuters, each adding additional WiFi
    devices (and therefore interference) to the area.

    You can get apps to map all the in-range WiFi SSIDs with their channel
    and signal strength, which would be useful both to analyse the problem
    and possibly find a free channel, or at least one with less contention
    that you are currently getting.

    Even with the laptop connected to the router by ethernet cable, last
    night i still got the same message from the website
    ("you appear to have insufficient bandwidth to
    view this video....required rate 1064 kbps, your available rate (varied
    between) 152 and 448 kbps.

    I took an instantaneous speed test at the time which showed a connection
    speed approx 5.5Mbps.

    always a bad idea because every user requires a separate data stream
    from the server (ok there are multicast possibilities and the option for

    What happens if you watch other video sites? Are they as bad?

    The speed test you ran measured an averege over the minute or two that
    it took; but there may have been periods within that measurement period
    where the rate was very low. The streaming video should cope with this
    if you have sufficient buffering - so long as the average is high enough.

    On the face of it the average speed from is less than
    a tenth of the average speed shown by the speedtest site - which
    suggests to me that is the cause of the problem.

    There is only one other user on my network (SWMBO's ipad)and this was
    not in use at the time.

    I have watched other video sites e.g youtube without any problem and
    also streamed sports events reasonably successfully.

    It is beginning to look as if the arsenal player is the problem.
