importing data from a Canon Wordstar

This one's going to be fun...

A friend has been diligently entering names & addresses onto his Canon
WordStar and needs to get the information from the floppy disk into Windows
to work on. Does anyone have any suggestions? For my sins I'm using XP Pro
with Office 2000, and I guess the ideal would be to stick the data (lots of
names and addresses) into something like a csv file.

Why I try to open the data in Excel, it isn't recognised, and Word sees it
as a Japanese (IJS?) format, but fills the page with a lot of strange
symbols in between the text, to such an extent that it would probably take
less time typing it in again than going through and cleaning the data.

If there's a free conversion utility out there, I'd be really grateful for a
    pointer.

    TIA
