I have a new system board with both SATA controller (4 connections)
and IDE controller (1 connection). I have connected the DVD and main
h.d. to SATA channels 0 and 1. The IDE controller, however, is not
detecting the IDE drive (older) that I've installed, even though in
BIOS the IDE controller is enabled. Is there something that I am
missing here? There are no special statements in the instructions for
the system board concerning running both IDE and SATA drives.

Both of the controllers are integrated with the system board.

Your ide drive has a jumper that has to be set to master. Unless you want
it as your root drive, set it as the last bootable device.
