HOW2 connect via Vodafone dongle?

    Short queries:-
    1. What's about '8-bit clean'?
    2. Compared to old pppd for dial-up & my fixed-wireless-terminal,
    there's errors re. different/wrong CHANNEL: what's that?

    =====> long story with logs <=============
    Since my PC+radio-connection was stolen, I needed to buy a VodaFone-dongle,
    which so far only works with M$pook.
    ---
    Via lsusb, modprobe, eject I was able to get the dongle to flash the LEDs,
    which the pamphlet indicates "3G network found and COULD connect".

    Does this thing use: <user>, <password> ?

    A MSwin user talks about one of the required arguments being???= "internet",
    how does that fit-in?

    From net-reports of 'voda??' of different locations/countries, I've
    abstracted the following `Script`:------
    #!/bin/sh
    #DEV=/dev/ttyUSB0
    #DEV=/dev/sg0
    #DEV=/dev/sr1
    #DEV=/dev/ttyUSB1
    DEV=/dev/ttyACM0 <--- also tried with ACM1
    echo "ATZ" >$DEV
    head -n 2 $DEV
    #echo 'AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","web.yesss.at"' >$DEV
    echo 'AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","Vodafone" >$DEV
    #echo 'AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet" >$DEV
    #echo 'AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","3" >$DEV
    #Init4 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","hs.vodafone.ie"
    #Init5 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","3ireland.ie"
    #"AT+CGDCONT=1,\"IP\"\"internet\""
    #Init4 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","3"
    head -n 2 $DEV
    echo 'ATD*99***1#' >$DEV
    head -n 2 $DEV
    sleep 1
    /usr/sbin/pppd debug nodetach 460800 $DEV

    --------- end of script, which gives:----

    # ./Script
    ATZ

    OK

    I can't see my linux logs now cos I'm in M$pook!

    NB. this whole exercise is complicated by the fact that the robbers who
    stole my computer & previous modem, have forced me to start with a
    CD-based instalation [a slackware derivative], which I've never before
    confirmed as able to 'pppd'.

    hda15 is my good-old-proven installation, which I'm presently only
    able to chroot into, due to boot-problems.

    But, I suspect you can't just `chroot` since the "booted partition's
    /proc ...etc." are needed for pppd ?

    As seen above 'it connected' and I did some `ping` [=OK];

    The common 'explanation': Do a, do b, ...do n is WRONG.
    The *correct* algorithm is:
    IF aFails THEN fixItandRepeat
    ELSEIF bFails THEN fixItandRepeat
    ....
    ELSEIF nFails THEN fixItandRepeat
    ELSE PassGo&Collect$200.

    Please advise on questions above:
    see "?" chars.

    ==TIA.

    PS. pasteing the cmnds manually to cli [instead of via a script], while
    monitoring
    </var/log/messages> and following the recorded previous log of 'success up
    to `ping`',
    does not re-succeed!

    ["Followup-To:" header set to comp.os.linux.networking.]

    If you're using a Slackware derivative why are you trolling the Debian
    newsgroup?

    Also, changing your From: to avoid people's killfiles is another
    indicator of being a troll.

    There are several knowlegable contributors on Debs & I'm migrating to rPi
    which is Deb-based & there are less stalker PERVERTS like YOU.
    I'm not married to any particular distribution, and I believe the linux
    community
    should avoid tribalism.
    Well if the golliwog-robbers had stolen YOUR PC & connection, and you
    had to use a new-temporary M$pook poster, your settings might also all be
    changed.

    You're not very bright are you?
