How water resistant is a water resistant lens?

  1. I just me a Canon 17-40mm f4.0 L lens. Niiiice!)

The manual, such as it is, says the lens is dirt- and water-resistant, and
it certainly feels well constructed. The question is, *how* water
resistant? Could I use it, for example, in a torrential downpour?

Water resistant is not the same as water proof so light rain, snow, or
at the beach would probably all be fine. Beyond that, I'd suggest
    checking directly with Canon first.

  3. Additional note: If it is a zoom lens, don't zoom it when damp.
