I remember reading an article about a "well known" problem in XP
that occurs when you have more than 400 folders -- a value in the
registry (400, but I don't know if it's in decimal or hex or...)
is exceeded and explorer will no longer remember your folder view
    options.

I tried to find the analagous registry entry in Windows 98, but I
    never could find it.

Can anyone help me out here?

    Thanks.

Folder views are stored in 'streams' / 'streamMRU' in 9x.
