Could the firewall (Zone Alarm) have an effect on the speed in which
new sites open in the browser?
If so, how to correct or are other fire wall applications faster than
the free version of Zone Alarm?

It shouldn't do, if it's set up correctly.
Outpost has plugins that allow you to block ad images, ActiveX
controls, scripts, etc. This can actually speed up your browsing
    experience.
