Haven't used printer for long time. Can't get any output at all from
the black cartridge even with a new one.

    terminal illness? worth treating?

The easy cure, buy a Canon printer. The not so easy cure, lots and
lots of cleaning cycles. Going further, you can buy special "flushing"
cartridges. Going further, it is allegedly possible to remove the print
head and soak it in Windex (Windolene in the neo-colonies).

  3. Well, it's an oldie but goldie, that's for sure.

With the power off, push the head away from
the parking station and put a few drops of
Windex on the foam pads. Push the head
back into the parking station, let it sit overnight,
and try another cleaning cycle or two.

If all else fails, consider that most Epson or
Canon desktop printers these days can
match or beat its output quality even in
models selling for as low as $100-$150.

  4. The head won't move more than a tiny bit, power on or off. Even if I could
move them how does one get to the area without disassembling the case?

....and use the Canon until _its_ printhead gets clogged? ;-)
