Drive Image or True Image Question

I have been using Drive Image 7 to do full drive back ups. Now I have True
Image 8 and am thinking of switching since I hear it is easier.

In all my time of backing up, I have never had the opportunity to do a full
restore. My question is, if my hard drive crashes and I need to put a new
hard drive in and then restore (from an USB external hard drive), does the
back up software automatically format the new drive or do I need to somehow
    set it up first?

Also, I have a 120 Gig drive in my computer now and I bought an exact 120
Gig drive in the event I need to replace. What if I didn't have an exact
drive? What if instead of the same manufacturer I had a different
manufacturer or different size drive? Say a 100 Gig or a 200 Gig? Can the
Image made from the 120 Gig (I used about 45 Gig) be restored to drives of
    different sizes?

Not sure about Drive Image but if it's like Norton Ghost(which I use)then
the info shows up when you're going to restore the backup to the drive(i.e.,
whether it's the whole drive or a partition, the name of the CD drive I'm
using to put the CD ROM restore disks from).
