I received a document in my email that was created in Microsoft Word for
Mac. And I use a Windows PC.

The document won't open. It shows up on my desktop with the Windows
    "unknown" icon.

I tried renaming the file with a .doc and .txt extension, but there was
nothing inside when I opened the file. Is there anything that I can do
to see this file's contents in Windows, without asking for the document
    again?

Open the File with the Windows Editor
Of course you won't be able to read the File,
but you can still view the File and therefor the Program
    Identification.
Rename the file according to the Program you see in the
    Header.
