I need serious help. I used a download accelerator to download a large file,
however it also downloaded around 1,000 other files. Norton cleared a lot of
virus's but 116 came through in zip files. Somewhere in my 'Documents and
Settings' folder is something that I can't touch. If I try to use any
Windows file it comes up with '...has encountered a problem and needs to
close' If I run a registry fix, or other trouble shooter, as soon as it
scans this file it also stops and closes. I really don't want to reload
Windows XP, but I think I might have to unless someone knows how to help me.
    Thanks

Name of the file would help.

    Start | Run <type in>
    MSCONFIG
    <enter>
Will stop services and programs from running at startup - but it can
    cause problems.

Autoruns is a better way to do this
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Security/Autoruns.mspx

See what's starting, google the unknown stop the malware or
questionable ones, reboot - delete the file.

I used to download a lot from Alt.cracks these files went to a
separate directory, Every month or so I'd scan that directory; so many
had virus's that I've seen Norton go into a loop or just quit, many
    times.

Give AVG spyware a try http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5

I have dl'd hundreds of cracks from two or three crack sites and
ng's and ONE had spyware in it, everything else was clean. I use
f-prot, Spybot AND InControl (when I install ANYTHING OR run a
    crack) so I know.

(Quite a few cracks are tagged as "possibly infected with
unknown" but in 99% of the cases that means nothing.)

Don't "reload" XtraProblems. Format, partition, and install
    Win98SE.

BTW, all download accelerators are a scam or worse.

And don't use Norton, last time they made anything good was
    about 12 years ago.

I've still got them, I could send them your way :) there archived.

I downloaded everything from the alt, crack and alt.binaries.cracks, in
case I might ever need one - if so, I'd check it out before running
    and only key generators.

If you've been downloading from those are clean.

Word of caution don't download from web crack sites (I used to until
    they went bad).

They're. And thanks, see below. And I am not denying your
    experience, just mentioning mine.
I never used those groups. I use cracks.am and keygen.us. Since
I use OffByOne there are no pop ups or any other bullshit. BTW,
read the user agreement on cracks.am, it's really funny.
NF. Didn't the network complain about the address?
I have limited experience. I used "bugs" or something until it
    got a little ridiculous.

Anyway, I have tried and deleted just about every program I ever
had any interest in by now, and the thought of trying even one
more fills me with mild disgust. I am basically just waiting for
the whole damn thing to blow up so I can go back to reading
books and listening to music full time.

  11. As well you should. I'm tired of these net kops telling everyone how to
behave and where to place the cursor. Good job.

  13. Now there's an irrefutable, indisputable and indubitably logical twist
of stupidity. Good job, no doubt, you've won over millions to your way
    of thinking.

  14. You may try to first update your virus definitions, then start up in "safe
mode" where only the minimum of drivers and services (and trojans) are
loaded, and do a scan. Next step would be "safe mode with network" and do a
    housecall or other online scan.
Then, try to install spybot s&d with teatimer (registry monitor) that helps
you block trojans as well, though it can be a PITA to have to negotiate any
registry fart. But there's a price for the "big file" downloads.
Next time be wiser and use a virtual machine to download suspicious stuff,
    preferrably loaded with some linux.
