    In mike s spewed forth:
Free: download the diagnostics/setup utility from the manufacturer of the
hard drive - Segate, Maxtor, etc. In that utility is (almost always) an
option to "copy partition". That will make an exact copy from one drive to
another. I've done it successfully almost every time. (The one time it
failed was a Windows 2000 Server SBE hard drive.)

Or, download the free version of xxclone at and not only
    will it do
this, but will make the cloned drive bootable as well.

The partition copy utility also creates a bootable copy. Plus you have the
available full diagnostics in the same utility.

Why are you trying to do this? to what end?
Plenty of options available, its the reason you should look at first.

There is nothing in XP that will do this for you.

The best solution would be to go to the hard drive manufacturer's web
site and download their free disk cloning utility.

Other alternatives include third party disk imaging utilities such as
Ghost (Symantec), BootItNG ( and Acronis True Image

    Good luck
