Checking mail manually 3.1.7

    I have my server settings for both "check for new messages" unchecked.
    Still every time I open Thunderbird it checks for new messages,
    depending on were I left it. If I had closed it while on a newsgroup it
    will open with that group selected and check for new messages, and if I
    close it while in an email account, it will open with that account and
    check for new messages.

    What am I missing?
