I recently used my System Restore disk to restore a Sony Vaio
Picturebook PCG-C1MVP to it's original installation of Windows XP Pro.
Did ALL the updates (and verified that fact), smoothly and without
incident. Everything works fine, except one thing. Under Control Panel
is Power Options. In Power Options, under the Advanced tab, is a
setting that says "When I close the lid of my portable computer:" One
of the options in the drop down box is "Stand by". I choose Stand by,
click Apply, click OK, and OK my way back out. It works the first time,
maybe twice, but then the next time I close the lid -- nothing happens.
When I go back to those settings, that "when I close the lid ..."
setting is NOW set to "Do nothing". I didn't change it. Why did it
change??? BTW, if I manually put the laptop into Stand By, it goes in
    fine and comes out fine.

What can I do to get my laptop to RETAIN it's setting to go into Stand
by when I close the lid? Seems so simple. I just want it to work.

Make sure you have full permissions for the
following registry key (Start / Run / regedit):

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    +Control Panel
    +PowerCfg
    +PowerPolicies

Right click and check the permissions option.
If you don't have full control, log on as administrator
    and give yourself full control.
