Can't connect to the internet after installing Windows Updates

I have a desktop and a laptop that were connected for about a year and
a half via cable modem and a Linksys wireless router and adapter.
(wireless for the laptop) The desktop hard drive had to be replaced a
few weeks ago, and my laptop was having problems so we decided to
    reformat it and reinstall Windows.

The reformatting itself went fine as did reinstalling the wireless
adapter. I was able to get online and went to get Windows Updates.
After downloading them and rebooting as asked, I could no longer get
on the internet - either via the wireless card or plugging in directly.
The wireless card would connect/disconnect about every 3 seconds,
    plugging in directly did nothing. Linksys's tech support was no help;
they suggested taking the laptop to a hotspot and seeing if it would
connect, which I'm leery of doing if I can't even install the proper
updates, firewalls, etc. I can't uninstall the updates, so the only
thing I know to do is reformat again and not install the updates. Has
anyone had this problem before and if so how did you fix it?

(I have to note that the first time I set this up, when it was right
out of the box, I had no problems whatsoever setting up the wireless
card, downloading updates, or anything else.)

Thanks in advance for your help,
