    I have W98se. I have ADSL with a SpeedStream 5660 router. I need to
reset everything cause I lost the router password. Support doesn't
have it cause I never gave it to them. They gave me instructions but I
have to be able to get a command prompt or a request for password
through hyperterminal over the serial port and management cable in
order to get connected. I get a flat blinking cursor and time running
lower left of hyperterminal saying I am connected. I hit the enter key
a few times and I never get anything but the cursor. Serial ports are
enabled in the bios. I have only one physical serial port. Do I need a
driver update for the serial port or what?

    Any help much appreciated.

Check the baud speed of the com(serial) port you're using,
9600 is a good place to start, it's in control panel.

Check your settings, baud, parity, flow control, etc. These must match
    the routers settings.

Make sure you are using a null modem cable. Sometimes called a "data
    transfer" cable.
