I picked up a Canon A80 recently and also a 512mb Sandisk CF card.. I
noticed that Canon recognized the cards as a 488mb only. Is this a
flaw? Has anyone noticed this on your cam? What is the usual % space
that is reserved for other info on a CF card?

I think its because the sellers use 1MB=1000KB, whereas in the digital
domain 1MB=1024KB. So after some math:
    512MB(seller) = (512*10E6)/(1024*1024) = 488.28MB

Its all a game of marketing. The marketing domain people do not give a
damn about computer standards. They are just trying to manipulate the
"mega" prefix used in analog domain with the digital domain and making
    the quick bucks.
