Canon 20D Flash. 580EX, 550EX or 420EX?

  1. Any recommendations for Canon 20D flashes? 580EX, 550EX or 420EX?

Obviously, I have read the tech specs and reviews, but am after comments
from people who have actually used any of them, and their thoughts.

I think the 420EX is lacking some important features ... we've been using the
550EX for several years and it works fine with the dSLRs (10D, 1D Mark II, 1Ds)
.... the 580EX is an upgrade over the 550 so if the price is not a problem I'd
    get that one now.

  3. What about ease of use? From what I have heard, you have to read the manual
    over and over again.

This is not a problem, as long as once you read the manual over and over
again, you can shoot quickly if need be, and not miss shots.

Then you have heard wrong, you need to read the manual sure, but most
    of it is easy.

I haven't used any of them (only the 540EZ - handling similar to the 550EX).
I would get the 580EX. Its big advantage is that it correctly adjusts to the
focal angle of your camera's 1.6 crop factor, while the other two use the
    35mm settings.

  6. The 420EX is a no-brainer; it offers very little to change. The 550EX
uses combinations of buttons (it *can* get confusing) whereas the newer
580EX has a quick control dial on the back (I would assume that its more

I just bought a 550EX for my 20D because I did not see the personal
advantage of the more expensive 580 EX. I may buy one later when the
prices drop. The 580 does recognize the digital difference (1.6X) but
I have tested my 550 and am quite happy with it.

Thanks, Don, I'd not seen this before.
Since I'm looking for a flash for my DR, I'll definitely read this.

I have a 10D and 420EX. I chose it for its weight and ease of use, but I
wish I could "dial it back" like you can the 550. Makes it harder to
control how much fill flash you get.
