Bandwidth issue in Milwaukee area(New Berlin)

Discussion in 'Computer Support' started by Chris DeNardis, Feb 19, 2004.

  1. Has anyone noticed bandwidth issues with the cable modem? I live in the New
Berlin area, and since the upgrade of Road Runner to the new high speed, I
cannot do as "much" as I used to. This is not during high peak, but early
in the morning, or late at night.

I have a Hardware firewall, and with two computers, my modem continues to
cycle, at times dropping my network connection.

If I have 1 computer and listening to streaming audio it drops frequently.

On-line help suggests there are no known issues at this time, and to
disconnect hardware firewall - yah right.

Additionally On-line suggested calling about my modem.

    any other ideas?

An excellent suggestion. In my case the signal strength measured at
the modem was +0 and returning to RR it was -19 to +12. Replacing
    the modem was the solution.

The symptoms were dropped connections to web, news and mail servers
and latency. Trace routes will show a very good path and then
immediately after be unable to complete. If this sounds familiar
then have them check the signal from their end while a tech is at
your home/office checking at that end.

  3. I wish I could just call and get a new modem without them coming out and
telling me what you have already told me - modem must be bad.

    Is that possible?

Is there a way I could make the measurements myself?
