    I have the following simple html. You can substitute any .gif file you have to test. In IE, the image appears to the right of the textbox and directly centered vertically. In firefox (3) it appears to the right, but at the bottom. If I specify align=bottom, it shows in the same place. If I specify align=top, it aligns with the top of the textarea. It just seems at though the middle is not working.

    <HTML><BODY>
    <textarea style="overflow:auto;width:600px;height:160px;"></TEXTAREA>
    <img tabindex="-1"
    src="img_menu.gif"
    style="cursor:default;display:inline;margin:0px"
    align="middle"
    width="16"
    height="16" />
    </BODY></HTML>

    Use a table to do the layout.

    Hope this helps.
    Code:
    <HTML>
    <BODY>
        <table>
            <tr>
                <td>
                    <textarea style="overflow:auto; display:inline;width:600px;height:160px;"></textarea>
                </td>
                <td>
                    <img tabindex="-1"
                    src="yourimage.gif"
                    style="cursor:default;display:inline;margin:0px; height: 76px; width: 77px;"
                    align="middle"
                    width="16"
                    height="16"/>
                </td>
            </tr>
        </table>
    </BODY>
    </HTML>
