Just a pointer in case anyone else has this problem.

I set up a connection between my lapop and my SonyEricsson cellphone
using The Sony Ericsson PC Suite and tested it out at home before
going away last weekend. All worked okay with no settings to change.

While away I used my vodafone sim for the first 10mb of data (only
costs $1) and then switched to my 2degrees one.
When I had the 2degrees one in there it told me I was connecting to
Econet NZ (Vodafone NZ), and poped up a warning that I was roaming and
the data may cost more. I told it to connect but it failed the login.
Turns out to get 2degrees to work while roaming you need to put in the
    setting APN: internet

BTW the latest version of the Sony Ericsson PC Suite is really good, a
huge improvement over the old one. The texting from the computer
(which stays in sync with your phone) is good too.
