ZoneAlarm Pro v4.5.538 (& build 530) - Connecting on its own!!

Discussion in 'Computer Security' started by Maxwell Britman, Jan 29, 2004.

  1. Okay here is a situation which I am currently experiencing with
ZoneAlarm Pro v4.5.538 which I could do with some help with:

    ----------------

    ZA Pro 4.5.538 initial installation.

Surf the net - no problems reported.

    Reboot.

Dial-up connection activated automatically and cancelled by me.

    Auto-dial disabled in network connections.

    Rebooted.

A dial-up connection box pops up - You (or a program) have requested
information from 'lockup.zonelabs.com'. This continues to happen every
    couple of minutes.

No mention in logs of any program trying to connect to the net. I'm
going to assume its ZoneAlarm Pro for now. No pop up box of said
    program asking for permission.

Once connected, everything works fine and again no alerts or
    permission boxes popping up.

    Reboot again.

    Again - dial-up connection box.

    ------------------------

This is very similar to the problem I had with Build 530 where an
actual 'bluey white' pop up box popped asking if I wanted to check for
updates or register or something similar which I can't remember at the
    moment.

In my opinion this smells very much of ZA Pro trying to check with
Zonelabs of validity of software - That in itself is not alarming.
What's alarming is that no mention is made anywhere of any attempt by
'ANY' component of ZA Pro trying to connect to the net. What's
annoying is that this cant be disabled. I have had to revert to
ZoneAlarm Pro with Web Filtering v3.7.143 as this one doesn't behave
weirdly. However, for all I know this version could be doing the same
thing behind my back. Will re-install and check back here with results
    shortly.

    Any suggestions?

P.S. Automatic updates is off so its not ZA Pro checking for updates.

Maxwell, check your Internet Logs folder in the Windows Folder. If
you've got a lot of DBtemp files in there, your database is probably
corrupt. You can delete everything in that folder, uninstall ZAP and
do a clean install. Sometimes starting over is the only thing that
    straightens it out.

Also, inside the Help file, there's a link to the Zonelabs User
Forums. Check it out. Lots of information and help there.
