Problem: Had zone alarm installed, it expired 12/31/05. I just downloaded
the new one today -- major issue there, it's a 13meg download, and I did it
with a dial-up connection. This was the paid Pro version. Installed it,
went through the whole thing, asked me for my license, and said it was
invalid (it wasn't -- I copied and pasted it from what they sent). So I
just clicked on the button that was something like "do it later".

It said I had to reboot the machine -- I did. Zone Alarm wouldn't start up.
Furthermore, I couldn't get into my email anymore. Then I tried to
uninstall it, and it said True Vector was still running.

I shut down and restarted with all the anti-virus and spybot stuff turned
off. I uninstalled it from the "run" command. I got rid of everything
related to it, the folders, files, everything. It was clean of Zone Alarm
(except I notice there are still some registry entries in there).

I reinstalled it. Everything installed fine, didn't even prompt me for the
license this time. Restarted the machine, and it's not there. Tried to
start it, got a message saying access was denied to zlclient.exe.

Emailed tech support, and of course got autoreplies back saying we'll get
back to you in two days. Phone calls are only taken during business hours
(when most of their customers are at work), and are charged for. Going to
the tech forum showed PAGES of complaints just from today on this download,
along with some moderators giving advice on how to install it, which didn't
help either, because it's what I did. Posts aren't all getting answered.
So basically the forum was useless. I have to have it uninstalled in order
to even get into my email. If it's "running" even though it isn't really, I
get pop-ups saying that I need to go into Services and stop True Vector --
but True Vector (vsmon.exe) isn't shown in Services as running.

Any suggestions? The only thing I can think of trying that I haven't is to
clean out the registry of all mentions of it and True Vector. Not real good
with this stuff, so not sure if that would create worse problems. In the
meantime, I'm sitting here with no firewall and out the $29.95.

    Ideas?

    Hello Karen,

I had also problems with ZA, now I use
    "Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall".
Try not to run two Firewalls at the same time,
they may have a conflicting rights, on who is the Boss.

Try a Free one from the Link below, after You log on
scroll down till You see "Free Firewalls"

    Start | Run <type in> FIREWALL.CPL <enter>
At least run the Win firewall until you get this figure'd out

ZA has become bloadware - took a good thing too far.

As mention'd it's time to try something else and get your money back -
or go back to a later version (I'm happy with 5.5)

Hey, thanks for the link!!!! I'm going to do just that, get the old
reliable version back. Unfortunately, in the meantime, I can't run Win
Firewall, because I'm running Win 2000 which doesn't have a firewall
included, so who knows what I have on my machine after all this! Nothing
like spending dial-up time downloading a 13+meg file TWICE -- with no
    firewall the entire time!

so did you install over what was there or remove and clean install as
    recommended?

For my own part, I have never had a thought which I could not set down
in words with even more distinctness than that with which I conceived
it. There is, however, a class of fancies of exquisite delicacy which
are not thoughts, and to which as yet I have found it absolutely
impossible to adapt to language. These fancies arise in the soul, alas
how rarely. Only at epochs of most intense tranquillity, when the
bodily and mental health are in perfection. And at those weird points
of time, where the confines of the waking world blend with the world of
dreams. And so I captured this fancy, where all that we see, or seem,
is but a dream within a dream.

I am using 6.5 ZA and have had no problems with it so far. The only thing is
this free version (like the previous versions) dosen't seem to recognise is
that I have anti virus installed but it claims not to detect it. (probably
    want me to upgrade!)

I did a clean install -- and when that didn't work, I did a COMPLETE
uninstall, registry settings and all. All windows programs were exited when
I did the installs. Even uninstalled the antivirus and tried installing
without that even being on the machine. I tried a total of eight times.
Nothing worked. Judging from the pages and pages of other people's problems
with this version as seen on their forum, lots of people are having lots of
problems, and the end suggestion was to go back to an earlier version.
During all this, one of the ZA people made yet ANOTHER version of it (about
an hour after I downloaded the 13meg one with my dial-up connection!), so I
downloaded another 13meg of the new one -- and tried it all over again, with
    no difference.

So I've asked them for a refund, and I'm doing what so many people are doing
    and going back to 5.5.

Try to edit your HOSTS file.
    WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Word in another newsgroup is that ZA (6.5) won't allow it even if you
    untick the option.

I'm still using version 5.5 because of problems with 6, it was shutting down
    without notice.
