I've just put in a dedicated extension to the main telephone socket in my
    house for my PC.

The signal's better and the internet's faster, but it has a strange habit of
cutting off... which it didn't do when it was on an extension, getting a
    worse signal.

Any ideas on how I can tackle this problem?

I'm wondering if I damaged the phone line...

    Cheers

You right click on your modem icon and select properties. Make sure under a
setting somewhere under a advanced button that your idle disconnect is not
on. Winmodems are very picky. They don't like to be hooked up on the same
line with anything. Especially digital phones. Make sure your line goes
directly to the wall to be sure you are getting the best connection. Unplug
other phones. If you havent upgraded your modem driver then do so. Check
your line wire also for age, and wear. You may need a replacement.
