I downloaded a file whose extension was .wma and Winamp had control of
the .wma extension and it had all sorts of skips and screw-ups in
Winamp but played fine in Windows Media Player.

I suspect that Winamp was using an old version of a WMA codec and this
    was a newer file.

Anyway, I used folder options to give WMA to WMP.
